The follow-up, 'You’ll Never Take me Alive' – The Life and Death of Bushranger Ben Hall, which told the moving story of Australia’s greatest bushranger was short-listed for the prestigious Ned Kelly True Crime literary award. His new book, 'Bloodlust – The Unsavoury Tale of Alexander Pearce Convict Cannibal', due for release in 2008, is hotly tipped to be another bestseller.
Nick was born in Scotland, grew up in Africa, has lived in the Middle East, America, Scandinavia and Australia and travelled to all points in-between during his film-making career. Rarely stuck for words, he is a lively and engaging speaker able to draw on the lessons of a colourful past, extensive media experience in front of and behind the camera and his many public speaking engagements, which include; writer’s festivals, formal debates, lectures and corporate motivation sessions.
Having smuggled secret documents out of Solidarity era Poland in his underpants then danced on the Berlin Wall a decade later, re- written a chapter of Japanese history, dedicated one of the only two statues to bushrangers in Australia, debated the Transvaal Boers on ‘Breaker’ Morant and survived a crocodile and shark attack in the Northern Territory (both narrow escapes!), Nick can speak in a scholarly and entertaining manner on a wide array of subjects. His areas of special interest include;
HISTORY. Through his many films and books Nick has developed a passion for a wide variety of historical subjects including; Australian history (bushranging, Australian military history, the convict era, gold rush), Russian/ Polish history, English/ Scottish/ Irish history and has much to say about how and why history is recorded, interpreted and distorted in the process.
MEDIA. His 25 years in the media working in advertising, journalism, marketing, public relations and television for many major corporations around the world has given Nick an excellent insight into the media, how it works, how to get yourself or your organization into it and how to perform well once you get there. Is happy to combine talks with workshops and practical media training sessions.
THE ART OF WRITING. As well as working in the media for quarter of a century, Nick has taught media for almost as long. As a teacher of film/ television production, screen-writing and fiction/ non- fiction, currently working for TAFE NSW and the NSW Writer’s Centre, Nick is a popular choice as a speaker at writer’s festivals, workshops, seminars and writer’s groups where he regales them with toe-curling tales of literary woe and words of sage advice. He is happy to combine talks with workshops or practical sessions.
