Martin Strel is one of the most elite athletes in history. He holds three Guinness world records in distance swimming, and is about to earn his fourth for his 2007 swim of the entire 5,267 km Amazon river, over 66 days. He earned his first Guinness in 2000 for swimming the entire Danube river, 3,004 km, over 58 days. He then broke his own record in 2002, by becoming the first person to swim the entire Mississippi, 3,797 km, in 68 days. In 2004, he broke his own record again by swimming 4,003 km of the Yangtze. Martin broke his record once again with the Amazon swim, covered in his book 'The Man Who Swam The Amazon' (Lyons Press U.S, 'Summersdale' UK).
Martin has been featured in many prominent magazines and newspapers around the world: National Geographic, New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Sports Illustrated, Sunday Times, Maxim, GQ, Telegraph, Observer, Guardian, Outside, The Melbourne Age, Le Journal du Dimanche, Sun Toronto, Folha de São Paulo, and many others. Martin’s projects have been followed by the biggest TV stations and news wires around the globe. The New York Times recently compared Martin with Sir Edmund Hillary.
Martin has been swimming for years under the slogan “swimming for peace, friendship and clean waters.” His swim on the Mississippi was dedicated to the victims of the 9/11 attacks, for which he achieved special recognition by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, and for which he was received at the UN by Kofi Annan. Later, the U.S. Congress passed a special resolution honoring Martin for his achievements and generosity.
Martin is the subject of the feature documentary 'Big River Man', slated for worldwide release in mid 2008.
Martin gives lectures on topics including Mental Preparation, Motivation, Endurance, Goal Setting, Determination, Team Work, Environment, Ecology. He integrates stories from his own experiences and achieve ments to illustrate two important messages: "No one knows your capability as well as you do" and "Only you know how far you can go." He explains how he mentally prepares himself for his feats and turns his dreams into reality by never giving up.
Martin's speeches are not focused only on great solo sports achievements, but also on the environmental messages he has devoted his career to promoting. His live talks on the stage are accompanied by attractive multimedia video presentations about his challenges, achievements and adventures.
