HOWARD WHELAN
Ben Hills

HOWARD WHELAN, the founding editor and then publisher of 'Australian Geographic' magazine, is one of Australia's best-know adventurers. Howard has led scientific expeditions to many remote parts of Australia, often resulting in significant geographical articles for the journal’s nearly one million readers. He has taken parties to the Amazon, Galapagos Islands, the Falkland Islands, South Georgia, the Antarctic Peninsula, New Zealand’s sub-Antarctic Islands, Macquarie Island, Heard Island, the Ross Sea and East Antarctica.

Howard was a key force in the success of Australian Geographic from its inception. Responsible for the production of 60 editions, Howard also wrote a significant body of feature articles, many of which included his own photography. As managing editor of AG Books, Howard managed the production of 30 titles and two editions of The Australian Encyclopaedia. He also produced The Australian Geographic Show, four 1-hour specials about Australia screened on Network Ten.

Howard has been commissioned to organise a 12-month Antarctic expedition to celebrate the centenary of Sir Douglas Mawson’s 1911-1914 Australasian Antarctic Expedition. He has also researched and developed a series of expeditions to explore Australia’s deep oceans using acrylic submersibles capable of 1000 metre depth. Howard was featured on CNN as an expedition leader, retracing Shackleton’s footsteps across South Georgia.

Howard was a cameraman on the first Australian ascent of Mt Everest, leading to the film The Aussie Challenge. The one-hour documentary won awards in the U.S. and Europe and was screened internationally.

Howard’s interest in the outdoors and adventure is pursued with a passionate conviction. In addition to holding a private pilot’s license, climbing in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Europe, Australia, Tibet, Thailand, Antarctica and Africa, he has also undertaken:

- A 4000 km, five-month mountain walk from Canada to Mexico

- Winter traverses of the Pennine Alps, Europe (Haute Route) and Hokkaido central range, Japan

- The Kokoda Trail, PNG

- The Shackleton Crossing of South Georgia.

Howard’s enthusiasm and unique combination of talents have led to many invitations to speak to a diverse range of audiences, from awards ceremonies at the Opera House for Australian Geographic, to lecturing at Sydney University. Other keynote addresses include the Byron Bay Writer’s Festival, the graduating class of Sydney College of the Arts, the Coastal Environment Centre, Kennedy Miller Productions and Rotary clubs. He has just been invited to lecture at the Queensland College of Arts.

Howard uses anecdotes to illustrate key points of his talks, and extraordinary photography to inform and entertain. He believes life is too short to waste and his presentations should excite and inspire his audiences. He combines the latest technology with slides, video and music to support his talks.
